Why Residue Free For Dreadlocks Is Important

Welcome back to another series of our blogs.

We would first love to welcome you to the Dreadlocks Society Community HERE

This is one of our most frequently asked questions? Along with how do I loc my dreads.

If you are getting salon dreads, your dread artists with be able to advise you on the best ways in which to manage your dreads, residue free products and locking products.

Personally, if you are doing your dreads yourself and maintenance. There are few important things to know.

FIRST THING - THE DREAD ITCH IS REAL!!

Firstly, keep it simple, you do not need to over complicate having your dreads. Your locks need to be clean, hydrated, and protected. So let us dive deeper into this.

Never just use normal everyday shampoo - OMG, you will itch like crazy!

The market for dreadlocks is huge - but always do your research and source something organic, cruelty free all natural. It's not only great for the integrity of your dreads and scalp but also your mind.

SECONDLY - WHAT I RESIDUE

Did you know that there are two main kinds of residue that can be left in your locks (this is why rinsing is so very important when washing your dreads). The first is from things that are added to your loc products like conditioners, oils, moisturizers, and extracts.

The other kind of residue we talk of is the by-product of how the shampoo works. This kind is unintentional and usually comes from traditional soaps containing animal fats or even vegetable sources, like coconut oil.

So basically, shampoo works by attaching itself to and surrounding dirt and oil, so when the soap is rinsed away, so are the other nasties. But in the process of cleaning, not all of the product leaves your hair.

Some of the product can remain in your hair / head and is converted into free fatty acids by components in your water. Remember back to when you were younger, the soap ring in the tub left after a bath, remember that? Now imagine that ring build up on and inside of your dreadlocks. It’s becoming a huge problem. And every time you ‘clean’ your hair, you add more residue. Now it’s a growing problem you just can't get rid of.

The question posed is, how to ease the itch, residue free and loc my locks: It's all about taking care and choosing the right dread products for your stunning locks. The tip is to make use of residue free shampoo for dreadlocks– the perfect selection and get away from itchy and irritated hair as well.

In our video below - we first talk about the dread bar for the scalp and shampoo for the locks. Why? The dread bar helps to nourish the scalp setting you up for success in the locking process. In this video below, our model has a half head of dreads and natural hair, so the dread shampoo bar is a beautiful to be used for both alongside the conditioning bar. Both can be used down the dreads also.

But the activated foaming shampoo is such a beautiful addition to the actual locks themselves, helping with the frizzies.
